This summer we are holding a summer intensive workshop where you will be studying acting, drag performance, playwriting, and story collecting, along with many other exciting things!

Why not join the cast in helping to create and perform in a new play that is exploring the true stories about queerness, more specifically the T in LGBT. We are hoping to break open the dialogue about trans identity and work hard to tell the real stories about transness, in all their fierce glory.

The times and dates for the workshop are as follows:
July 1st through July 31st
Monday through Friday
From 12pm to 5pm

Just this past Saturday About Face Theatre held its multigenerational event at the UIC campus. Everyone arrived and we got into introducing ourselves and had a little ice breaker. Everyone seemed really awesome and excited to be there.

First, we started with an activity that involved us all splitting into groups of about four or five people. We then got together, some in different rooms, and discussed four questions we were given by Sara and Tony. The questions were pretty interesting, for example one question asked us about how we feel our LGBTQ identity has changed over the course of our lives and how it has changed our personalities. Another was about who we think of as a role model and who inspires us now. Everyone shared their thoughts on the questions and we were able to get to know each other better as well as able to identify narratives that repeat throughout the LGBTQ community.

Next, everyone spilt from their groups into pairs. Each person shared their story as a member of the LGBTQ community, with their partner. Once everyone had shared their story with their partner, bigger groups were made again and stories were picked by each group to be presented to the larger group. Tony and Sara made sure to keep the method of sharing the story very open to encourage creativity and the outcome was really interesting. Everyone did an awesome job presenting and sharing their stories, which is a brave thing to do.

And last but not least we all met in the Behavioural Sciences Building on campus to hang out and have pizza! Overall, it was a really fun event and it seemed like everyone really enjoyed themselves.

Join us for a story exchange that will bring together LGBTQ people of various ages to participate in a conversation about our past, present and future. We encourage transgender and gender variant folks to document your stories and contribute them to About Face Youth Theatre’s next oral history project about trans identity. Come build community by sharing experience of living Queer Then and Queer Now!

The event will take place on Saturday, April 2 from 12:30pm-3:30pm at the UIC campus.

The workshop on  Saturday, February 12th with guest Performance Artist Joe Goode was a delight. Mr. Goode’s unique approach to expression through a mix of movement and words led the group to create evocative vignettes ranging from narrative based to more abstract.

This was the first intergenerational workshop including both the youth ensemble and select artistic associates. Everyone was able to bring a different perspective to the type of performance structure offered by Mr. Goode, which resulted in a beautiful variety of projects from everyone!
